Mirage

Off-grid one bedroom container home optimized for life in the California desert with 40KW of solar for home & shop on property. For more works like this visit Nick Gough Design.

Designed a unique roof-rack system to optimize solar exposure and support a large solar array. It preserves the container’s structure, shades the roof, and provides overhangs to reduce interior temperatures in a hot, arid climate.

The underside of the roof rack is wrapped in reflective vinyl, bouncing ambient light into the home to keep it bright despite deep overhangs. This subtle effect creates an illusion on the shaded approach, inspiring the project’s name.

Designed a modular, low-cost deck system for harsh environments; space-saving, built-in office storage; and a flexible dining table that expands or contracts as needed.

Final design preserves the container’s integrity, highlighting its durability, weather resistance, and tough exterior. Original doors were kept for indoor/outdoor flow and to honor its past. Added features include a semi-attached catio and storage.
